Hi YoTown Friends! π
Sharpen the pencils⦠this is the last real weekend before the buses roll. We counted 126 events across the Valley, and eight of them exist purely to get your kid out the door on day one with a full backpack and a fresh haircut. But it's not all supply lists: there's a Beach Boy at the Robins, a Pickle Fest downtown, goat yoga at an orchard, balloons over a winery, and enough live music to fill every night through Sunday. Grab a lawn chair, make one last summer memory, and we'll see you at the bus stop.

β Austintown In the Headlines Againβ¦
Austintownβs Has New Fitness Digsβ¦
Thereβs something new to cheer about in Austintown.
Austintown Local Schools boasts a $12 million, 44,000-square-foot indoor athletic center, giving local students a place to practice, train and improve their skills all year long β regardless of what Northeast Ohio weather has in store.
For student-athletes at Austintown Fitch, that means fewer practices disrupted by rain, snow and cold temperatures. Football and soccer players can work on drills indoors, while baseball and softball teams have room for hitting, pitching and even scrimmages. The facility also gives the marching band an indoor option when conditions outside arenβt cooperating.
A facility of this size represents a major commitment to the students who live and learn in the community. It provides young athletes with more opportunities to develop their skills, gives coaches additional flexibility and creates another space where students can come together around teamwork, discipline and school pride.
For Austintown families, it's another reminder that some of the most encouraging news isn't happening hundreds of miles away.
πΎ Good Dog Roll Call: Three Pups, No Visits Yet
Every dog at the wardenβs office is waiting on one person to make one phone call. This week the Mahoning County Dog Warden has so many dogs listed. Here are three.

π΄ Editorβs Pick: Shaker Woods Festival
π² This Week's Feature: Shaker Woods Festival, Columbiana
If you have lived in the Valley for more than a minute, somebody has told you to go to Shaker Woods. This is the year you actually do it. The festival is celebrating its 45th run, and there are exactly two weekends left: August 15 and 16, then August 22 and 23. After that you wait until next summer, and by then the kids will be halfway through a school year.
Here's what makes it different from every other craft show. More than 200 juried craftspeople set up along shaded wooded paths, working in period Shaker attire, and most of them are actually making the thing right in front of you. Blown glass, pottery, hand built furniture, baskets, candles, jewelry, leather. Food vendors cook over open fires. Live music drifts through the trees. You walk in for an hour and leave four hours later carrying something you did not plan to buy.
Back-to-school bonus: this is a genuinely great place to knock out teacher gifts, grab fall decor before everybody else does, and get one big family day in before the calendar fills up with practices and permission slips. Wear comfortable shoes, the paths are rustic on purpose. Bring cash for the food vendors. Kids 12 and under get in free, so this one is easy on the wallet. π

π΄ Local Eats Spotlight: Kravitz Deli
The Brown Bag Lunch That Went to College and Never Came Back
Kravitz Delicatessen β Belmont Ave, Youngstown
Nobody is packing this in a lunchbox. Kravitz has been on Belmont Avenue since 1939 Same family, same recipes with more than 80 years of getting corned beef right. They move something like 40,000 pounds of it a year, and one look at a Kravitz Reuben tells you why.
So here's your back-to-school assignment: the first week the house is quiet again, go get a real lunch. Corned beef piled high, a cup of wedding soup or the "Jewish penicillin" chicken noodle, and something from the pastry case you absolutely do not need. They're open weekdays 10β6, which makes this very doable between drop-off and pickup. π
Bonus for the parents already dreading the fall calendar: they cater. Team dinners, band boosters, the classroom party you volunteered for in a moment of weakness⦠Inspired Catering by Kravitz will handle it.

π Some Pests Also Go Back to School
Late August is peak season for the uninvited. Yellow jackets turn aggressive right as football practice and backyard hangouts hit their stride. Ticks hold on along wooded edges where kids cut through. And as nights cool, mice start scouting your house for their own fall housing. Complete Pest Solutions is headquartered right here in Boardman β neighbors, not a call center β with 4.8 stars from 400+ customers. Wasps, ticks, ants, rodents, wildlife: they handle it. Get an inspection on the calendar now, before the first cold snap sends everything indoors. π«
Call them. 4.8 stars, 400-plus customers.

Show and Tell, But Make It 25,000 Square Feet
Mr. Darby's Vintage & Antiques, Boardman
Some of you drive past this place on Market Street every single day and have never once pulled in. Fix that. Mr. Darby's is 25,000 square feet with more than 125 vendors under one roof, and reviewers keep using the same phrase: walking into wonderland.
What's inside is the fun part. Fiestaware and Pyrex your grandma had in the exact same colors. Old Nintendo games and PokΓ©mon cards. Coins, turquoise jewelry, steampunk oddities, furniture, holiday stuff, and roughly nine hundred things you did not know existed. Prices get described as ridiculously fair, which is not something people usually say about antique malls.
Back to school angle: this is the perfect low cost afternoon once the routine kicks in. Take the kids on a Saturday and let them hunt for something weird. Grab a lamp for the dorm room. Or go alone on a quiet weekday and browse in total silence, which honestly might be the real gift here. π°οΈ
Picture Day Is Coming β Be Ready for It

Call 330-977-5788 for free consultation
The kids get new shoes, fresh haircuts, and a backpack that doesn't have last year's granola bar in it. What do you get? Ten minutes of quiet in the car line. Let's fix that. A summer of sun, sweat, and sunscreen leaves skin dull and congested β a skin treatment hits reset before school-year chaos starts. And if there's a tattoo you've been meaning to deal with, ask about laser tattoo removal: new school year, clean canvas. Call or text for a free consultation, and grab your spot before the first-week rush. πβ¨
π« Free consultations, gift cards available, and yes, we'd love to see you before the parade.
π―οΈ Your Recess Finally
Remember when the best part of the day was twenty minutes outside with zero responsibilities? Youngstown Head Spa is the grown-up version. Once the bus pulls away and the house goes quiet, come claim one peaceful hour that belongs entirely to you β warm water, scalp massage, lights low, phone somewhere else. It's the reset button for the parent who spent all August hunting down folders in the exact right color. Gift cards available too, which makes this a very good idea for the teacher in your life. π
π The Supply List Nobody Hands You
Pencils, glue sticks, three-ring binder. Check, check, check. Now the list they don't send home: is your teen driver actually on your policy? Is the house covered the way it was five years ago? Is the camper you just parked for the season protected all winter? Preston Moore handles the boring-but-important stuff so you never find out the hard way. One quick review, done in less time than a homework meltdown, and you head into the school year with the paperwork side of life squared away. Give him a call. π
Undo Three Months of Summer in One Afternoon
All Spruced Up Cleaning Co
Pool towels on the banister. Sand in places sand should not be. A kitchen that has hosted roughly nine hundred popsicles since June. Summer was worth it β but the house needs a fresh start just as much as the kids do. All Spruced Up resets the whole place so you walk into the school year ahead instead of behind. Warning: they book a few weeks out, and everybody has this same idea in August, so grab your spot now. Free online estimate takes about a minute. π
π¨ The 6:45 AM Shower Rush Is a Stress Test
1-800-Plumber +Air Youngstown
Summer was easy on the plumbing β everybody wandered in and out on their own schedule. Now three people need hot water in the same twenty minutes, the washing machine runs nightly, and that slow drain you've been ignoring since June is about to become a Monday morning emergency. Get ahead of it. 1-800-Plumber +Air Youngstown is licensed, fast, and fixes it right the first time β drains, water heaters, and the AC still working overtime through these last warm weeks. Call before the school-year schedule leaves you no time to deal with it. π§
π‘ A New School District Starts With a New Address
Hailey Ditullio, Realtor β Howard Hanna
Every August, somebody in the Valley looks at the school calendar and thinks: next year, I want us settled somewhere else. Poland, Boardman, Canfield β Hailey Ditullio knows these neighborhoods street by street, which ones fit growing families, and what your current home is really worth right now. Start the conversation this fall and you're unpacked well before next year's first bell. Whether you're buying your first place or outgrowing the one you've got, she'll help you find a home that fits the life you're building. No pressure, just a good place to start. π
π² One Last Adventure Before the Homework Starts
Squeeze every last drop out of these final free weekends. Cruise the Creek gets your whole crew through Mill Creek Park on e-bikes β the kind of afternoon they'll still be talking about at lunch in October. Pick the "Trailside Journey" if you want flat, paved, and beginner-friendly, or "Unleash Your Adventure" for the wooded, hilly route if your riders are confident. It's also a criminally good date-night idea once the kids are back in a routine and you finally have a Tuesday to yourselves. Text to reserve β weekends fill fast. π
β Day Trippin'
The Field Trip You Get to Chaperone on Purpose
Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland
About 75 minutes up the road, right on the lakefront next to the Rock Hall, sits the single best way to trick your kids into learning something in August. Hundreds of hands on exhibits, daily science demos, and the NASA Glenn Visitor Center with real spaceflight hardware, including an actual Apollo command module.
Add the Steamship William G. Mather if you want to climb through a restored 1925 Great Lakes freighter, engine room and pilot house included. Or catch a film in the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, where the screen is so big it feels less like watching and more like falling in.
Two heads up before you go. Starting in September they close on Mondays, so grab a summer Monday while you still can. And they close entirely on Browns home game days, which is exactly the kind of detail that ruins an otherwise great Sunday. Check the calendar, pack snacks, go be curious. π
