Hi YoTown Friends! 🍂

This is it. This is the weekend fall actually starts. White House Fruit Farm throws its doors open Friday morning, the maze at Coolspring Ranch cuts the ribbon Friday at four, Derthick's opens its season the same night, (details below) and Columbiana takes over its own downtown for three straight days. Pull the flannel out, grab shoes you do not care about, and go be outside. We counted sixty events for you and mapped every corn maze within two hours of the Valley while we were at it.

🌽 Editor's Pick: Officially Fall Season ‘Round Here

There is a specific kind of quiet that only happens when you are eight rows deep in corn and everyone has stopped talking because nobody wants to admit they took the wrong turn. That is the whole appeal. You paid money to be confused in a field, and it is somehow the best two hours of your life.

Three farms flip the switch (to fall) this weekend. Start here…

⭐ White House Fruit Farm Opens for Fall · Friday morning

The Canfield institution opens its fall season Friday at 9 a.m., and Fall Harvest Weekends run every Saturday and Sunday from there through October 25. Horse drawn wagon rides, the petting zoo, pony rides, unicorn rides, the budgie barn, face painting, bale making, music on the lawn from noon to three, and food vendors Friday through Sunday. And the donuts. You know about the donuts. Farmville Fun is $10 per child ages 2 to 15, wagon rides $5, petting zoo $1, budgie barn $3 cash only.

📅 Fall Opening, Friday Sept 11 at 9 AM
📍 9249 State Route 62 · Canfield, OH 44406

🌐 whitehousefruitfarm.com

⭐ The Maze at Coolspring Ranch Opens · Friday at 4 PM

Opening weekend, and it doubles as Grandparents Weekend, so bring the whole lineup. This is Coolspring's 22nd fall season and the maze has been voted best in the nation by USA Today. Beyond the corn there is an indoor hay maze, a hayride, a pedal tractor racetrack, two forty foot mountain slides, a forty foot jump pad, tight ropes and a barnyard board game. Grilled burgers, fresh cut fries, fresh donuts and lemon shakes on site. Season runs through November 1. The Schoolhouse Shop and the pumpkins do not require admission.

📅 Opening Weekend, Friday Sept 11 at 4 PM
📍 537 Franklin Rd · Mercer, PA 16137

⭐ Derthick's Corn Maze Opens · Friday night

A 200 year old working farm in Mantua with sixteen acres cut into three mazes, plus zip lines, human hamster wheels, corn cannons, a jump pad, family trikes and a bouncing cow train. Bonfires on the cold nights and Music on the Pavilion through the season. Weekends September 11 through October 25. Friday 6 to 11, Saturday 1 to 11, Sunday noon to 6. Last tickets sell 90 minutes before close. Admission is $14 cash for ages 3 to 64, $8 for 65 and up.

And next weekend the two big ones land: Maze Craze in New Springfield opens Friday, September 18 with four mazes and 9.3 miles of trail, and Maize Valley in Hartville opens Saturday, September 19 with the pumpkin cannon that launches a pumpkin about half a mile. Put them on the calendar now.

Your Dog Deserves a Fall Break Too

Canine Cove Pet Resort

Here is the thing about leaf season. It is wedding weekends, it is a cabin in Hocking Hills, it is somebody's out of town game, and it is a lot of long days where nobody is home. Your dog should not spend all of that staring at the door. Canine Cove boards dogs in Austintown with playtime built right into the nightly price, kennels sanitized daily, multi pet discounts and cat boarding too. Boarding drop off runs 4 to 6 p.m. and pickup 8 to 11 a.m. Daycare is there for the in between days when your schedule gets away from you. Book the boarding before the fall calendar fills, because it always does.

🌮 Local Eats Spotlight: Plaza Azteca, Canfield

Plaza Azteca is the move after a day in the corn, and it is about to be an even better one. The Canfield location is putting in a new patio, which means the tail end of the season gets a whole lot more pleasant. Sixty five degrees, a jacket, a plate of something hot and a margarita outside is arguably the correct way to close out a Saturday in September.

The tableside guacamole is the thing to order first, made in front of you and adjusted to whatever you actually like. Regulars come back for the birria tacos, the fajita burrito and the chimichanga. There are gluten free and vegetarian options, the portions are generous, and the margaritas have won them awards for a reason. They opened the Canfield spot in 2023 and have quietly turned into a Valley staple since.

Oh, and did we mention the street corn?

🍎 What's Ripe Right Now

Mid September is the greediest two weeks of the Ohio growing year. Summer has not fully let go and fall is already showing up, which means the farm stands are the fullest they will be all season. Here is what to actually put in your basket this week.

At peak, buy it now

  • Apples. The main event. Ohio apples run hardest September 1 through October 25. Honeycrisp comes off the trees in early September, Cortland lands mid to late month, and Golden Delicious rolls in right around the end of September.

  • Grapes. Table grapes hit their tightest window right now, roughly September 10 to 20, and then they are gone fast.

  • Pumpkins. Mid September through October, with the heaviest picking the first half of October.

  • Winter squash. Butternut, acorn, delicata. Late August all the way into November, and they store for months.

  • Peppers. Sweet and hot both run through the end of October.

  • Bartlett pears. September is basically the whole season.

  • Plums. Good through the end of the month.

  • Fall red raspberries. Mid August straight through to the first frost.

  • Broccoli and cabbage. Both hold strong through October 31.

  • Potatoes, eggplant, collards, beets, carrots, kale, turnips. All in the thick of it.

  • Cauliflower. Just starting. It peaks October 5 through November 20, so this is the warm up.

Last call, do not wait

  • Sweet corn. Winding down around September 25.

  • Tomatoes. Heaviest picking ends mid September, then it is a slow fade to frost. If you were going to can, can now.

  • Peaches and nectarines. Basically done by September 15.

  • Okra. Through about September 15.

  • Cucumbers and melons. Season is closing out.

Dates are typical Ohio windows and can swing two weeks either way depending on weather and which end of the county you are standing in. Call the farm before you drive.

🥕 The Market Moves Earlier:
Downtown Youngstown Farmers Market

Thursday, September 10 and Thursday, September 24 · 4:00 to 6:30 PM

Heads up, because the time changed. The Downtown Youngstown Farmers Market has pulled back to 4:00 to 6:30 PM for the rest of the season. School is back, the weather is turning, and the evenings are getting dark a lot faster than they were in July. Come a little earlier and you will still get the good light.

It runs the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month on the lawn at the Public Library of Youngstown, 305 Wick Avenue. Farm fresh produce, eggs, honey, bread, tea, baked goods and more, all from people who grew or made it themselves. And if you read our what's ripe section this week, this is exactly where to go find it. September is peak apple, grape, pepper and winter squash season in the Valley, and the market will show it.

Worth knowing: this market takes SNAP/EBT, Family Fruit and Vegetable Coupons, Produce Prescription Coupons, Senior Farmer Market Nutrition Coupons and cash. WIC Farmer Market Coupons are coming soon. Some vendors also take credit, debit, CashApp and Venmo, though bring cash to be safe.

⚑ Jacq: Detwiler has not posted confirmed 2026 dates and Hartford Orchards has not announced theirs. Kuchta's street number shows up two different ways in listings so I left it off. The Pittsburgh side farms I did not date because their 2026 schedules were not posted where I could see them.

One Quiet Hour After a Loud Weekend

Youngstown Head Spa

Corn mazes are wonderful. They are also two hours of a four year old asking which way, wind in your face, and a car ride home with everyone sticky. At some point this season you are going to need an hour where nobody needs anything from you. That is what a head spa treatment is. Warm water, slow hands, a scalp that has been carrying tension since roughly August, and quiet. You come out feeling like you got a full night of sleep in sixty minutes. Book one for yourself, or grab a gift card for the person in your family who plans every single one of these farm trips and never gets a break.

🎃 Flying Pumpkins and Other Farm Nonsense

If you thought the maze was the whole show, you have not been paying attention. This is the good stuff.

  • The pumpkin cannon at Maize Valley. The big one launches a pumpkin about half a mile downrange. Demonstrations are included with fall admission. Get there early, the crowd builds fast.

  • Detwiler's pumpkin smash. On the final weekend of the season, Detwiler Farm in Columbiana hands you three field pumpkins and a choice of sledgehammer, mallet, golf club or baseball bat for around $14. The pumpkins go back into the field either way, so you are technically composting. Owner Sam Detwiler figured out years ago that people would happily do the farm's work for them if you framed it right.

  • Pumpkin Chunkin at Fair Haven Farms in Grove City, if you would rather launch than smash.

  • Corn cannons at Derthick's in Mantua, alongside zip lines and human hamster wheels, which is a sentence we did not expect to write.

  • Pumpkin Destruction Day at Kuchta Farms, October 31. They close out the season with exactly what it sounds like.

  • Duck races and pig races at Maize Valley. The whole crowd gets split into teams. It is far more competitive than it has any right to be.

  • Moonlight maze nights. Derthick's runs them, and Kuchta's does Flashlight Maze Nights October 2 and 3. Bring your own flashlight and lower your expectations about finishing quickly.

🚜 The Boring Thing That Makes the Fun Stuff Possible

Moore Family Insurance

Fall in the Valley means a lot of miles. Trips to Hartville, a camper out one last weekend, a boat coming out of the water, deer season, holiday guests in the driveway and a house full of people by November. All of it is more fun when you are not quietly wondering whether you are actually covered. Preston Moore sits down with Valley families and goes through the whole picture, home, auto, the toys, the stuff you forgot to mention, and tells you straight where the gaps are. It takes one conversation. Then you can go get lost in a corn field with a completely clear head.

Wake the Furnace Up Before It Wakes You Up

1-800-Plumber +Air Youngstown

It happens the same way every year in the Valley. You get one genuinely cold night in late September, you flip the heat on for the first time since March, and something is off. A smell, a noise, or nothing at all. Better to find out now, on a Thursday, than on the first hard freeze in November when everyone else is calling too. Get the furnace looked at before the season turns, and while they are there, have them check the outside spigots and anything that will need to be shut down before the first freeze. Licensed, fast, and they fix it right the first time.

Homes with a Little Land:
A Porch Worth Putting Mums On

Hailey Ditullio, Realtor · Howard Hanna

Fall is when people start really looking. You spend a Saturday driving out past Columbiana or down through Poland, the leaves are turning, and you catch yourself thinking about a place with a little more yard and a front porch that could hold a hay bale and three pumpkins. Hailey Ditullio knows Poland, Boardman and Canfield block by block, and she is honest with you about which neighborhoods actually fit the life you are building instead of just the one on the listing sheet. Start the conversation now and you could be handing out candy at your own new front door.
