Health Corner: Bakuchiol vs Retinol
Bakuchiol vs. Retinol — The Cliff Notes version
Retinol: The Gold Standard
• Vitamin A derivative, clinically proven anti-aging
• Speeds cell turnover, boosts collagen, fades dark spots, controls oil
• Works great — but comes with baggage
• Causes purging (peeling, redness, irritation)
• Increases sun sensitivity
• Dries out skin & disrupts the barrier
• Not safe during pregnancy
• Women 40s/50s often become too sensitive for it
• Plant-derived (no Vitamin A), used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries
• 2018 clinical study: same results as retinol, significantly less irritation
• Boosts collagen, activates retinol-like receptors, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory
• No purge. No UV sensitivity. Safe morning AND night.
Who Should Use Bakuchiol?
• Sensitive or reactive skin (hello rosacea girlies like me)
• Skin in your 40s, 50s, 60s
• Anyone who tried retinol and had a bad experience
• Anyone tired of "gets worse before better"
Bottom Line: Retinol isn't bad. Bakuchiol isn't just a trend. But if your skin has been fighting you — bakuchiol is the smarter choice.
