Youngstown is back in the game+ somebody is jumping out of a plane this weekend

Wingsuits, wrestling, corn roasts, football-duh, PLUS 96 things to do this weekend!!

Hi YoTown Friends! 👋

Youngstown’s Friday night lights are on. Somewhere out there a band is running the same eight bars for the ninth time, a concession stand is heating up nacho cheese, and a whole Valley is remembering that it likes fall better than it admits. Grab the stadium blanket, put the folding chairs back in the trunk, and let's get back in the game.

🐾 Good Dog Roll Call: Draft Day

Somebody out there is one signature away from the best teammate they will ever have. This week's roll call goes to a shelter pup who is very much a free agent.

✨ Editor's Pick: The Home Opener

If there is one thing that makes this the Friday Night Lights edition, it is Thursday night, which is a very Youngstown way to do things. The Youngstown State Penguins open at home against the Mercyhurst Lakers, and Stambaugh Stadium in late August is one of the genuinely great experiences in this town: the hill full of people, the band echoing off the buildings, and that first cool breath of air coming off the north end.

Get there early. Park once and walk. Buy the bad hot dog anyway. Whether the Penguins are rebuilding or reloading this year, the first home game is never really about the record. It is about the fact that the lights came back on.

📍 Stambaugh Stadium · Youngstown, OH
🕰️ Thursday, August 27 · 6 PM

And if you want a doubleheader kind of day, the Scrappers host the Aberdeen IronBirds at Eastwood Field that same afternoon. Baseball at two, football at six. That is a perfect Thursday.

🍴 Local Eats Spotlight: When You CANNOT Wait

Let's be honest about something. The Canfield Fair is still more than a week away, and some of you are not going to make it. You have already thought about it. You know exactly what it smells like walking past that window, and you know the specific sound the icing makes coming off the spatula.

Good news: you do not have to hold out. Molnar's has the trailer parked on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown, which means the cinnamon roll you have been dreaming about since last September is roughly a ten-minute drive from wherever you are sitting right now. Same rolls. Same warm, ridiculous size. No parking field, no gate admission, no walking a mile back to the car with a box balanced on your forearm.

Go early, go with cash, and buy one more than you think you need, because the second one never makes it home. Consider it a pre-gaming for Fair week. 🥮

A Good Defense Wins Championships

Complete Pest Solutions
Late August is when the uninvited guests show up strong. Yellow jackets and wasps peak right now, right when you are grilling on the deck before kickoff. Ticks are still working the wooded edges of every practice field, and the first cool nights send mice hunting for a warm locker room. Complete Pest Solutions is headquartered right here in Boardman, so you are calling neighbors, not a call center. Wasps, mosquitoes, ants, rodents, bed bugs, wildlife: they cover the whole roster, with 4.8 stars from 400+ customers. Get a real defense on the field before the tailgate.

Back to School, Back to Business

Our sponsors are the reason this thing lands in your inbox every week. They are local, they are real, and they are all having a very Friday-Night-Lights kind of week too.

🏈 Nobody's Home at Kickoff

Canine Cove Pet Resort

Backpacks are packed, practice runs till dark, and for the first time all summer the house sits empty from 7 to 4. Meanwhile your dog is home alone staring at the door.

Canine Cove Pet Resort in Austintown is built for exactly this stretch of the calendar, and boarding is the star of the show: playtime is included in the nightly price, everything is sanitized daily, and multi-pet discounts mean the whole crew travels together. Cat boarding too. Need a shorter shift? Daycare runs weekdays so your pup burns energy while the school day runs long. And with Labor Day weekend two weeks out on September 7, now is the time to lock in those nights, because the good spots go first. 🐾

Summer is Rough on Your Skin

Skin Solution Medspa

Skin Solution Medspa

Summer played rough. Sun, sweat, sunscreen, chlorine, and long days in the bleachers leave skin dull, congested, and a little tired of it all. Consider this your preseason reset. A facial at Skin Solution Medspa clears out the damage and gets your glow back in the game before fall photos, homecoming, and every holiday party after that. Carrying a tattoo you have outgrown? Ask about laser tattoo removal while you are here. New season, clean canvas.

Call or text for a free consultation, and grab a gift card for whoever ran carpool all summer.

Somebody Need a Timeout?

Youngstown Head Spa

School started, practice schedules landed, and your calendar suddenly reads like a two-a-day. Every good coach knows the timeout matters as much as the drive. Youngstown Head Spa hands you one quiet hour that is genuinely yours: a warm scalp treatment, a head and neck massage, and a room where nobody needs a permission slip signed. You walk out lighter, looser, and ready to face the group chat again. It sits in the same building as Skin Solution, so you can stack a facial and a scalp session into one very good afternoon. Gift cards available.

The Boring Play That Wins Games

Moore Family Insurance

Every great football team has that one unglamorous lineman who quietly makes the whole thing work. That is your insurance policy. Fall in the Valley means teenage drivers running to school and practice, campers and boats coming off the road, deer season on the horizon, and a house full of people every game day. Preston Moore at Moore Family Insurance in Canfield will actually sit down with you, walk through auto, home, life, and the stuff you forgot about, and tell you straight where you are exposed. No pressure, no jargon. Call him before the season gets away from you.

🚨 When Your House Starts Limping

1-800-Plumber +Air Youngstown

Fall is when your house starts limping. The AC that barely survived August. The water heater groaning under three showers after practice. The drain that has been slow since the graduation party. Small stuff turns into a season-ending injury fast. 1-800-Plumber +Air Youngstown shows up licensed, on time, and honest about what actually needs fixing versus what can wait. Plumbing and HVAC both, so it is one call instead of three. Get the furnace looked at now, before the first cold Friday night in the bleachers makes you think about it.

🏡 Find Your Home Field

Hailey Ditullio, Realtor · Howard Hanna

There is a reason people argue about which school district they land in. Friday nights, the band warming up on the corner, kids who can walk to the game together: that is the real listing feature, and it never shows up in the square footage. Hailey Ditullio with Howard Hanna knows Poland, Boardman, and Canfield well enough to tell you which street actually fits your family, not just which one fits your budget. Buying, selling, or just curious what your place would bring this fall, she will give you a straight answer. Start now, be settled before the holidays.

🚲 Run Your Own Two-Minute Drill

Cruise the Creek E-Bikes

Before the leaves turn and the Valley goes full sweater weather, get one more perfect ride in. Cruise the Creek rents e-bikes for Mill Creek Park, and late August into September is the best riding of the entire year: cooler air, softer light, and trails that finally feel like yours again. Pick the Trailside Journey if you want flat, paved, and easy, or Unleash Your Adventure if you want the wooded, hilly version. Great date night, great family outing, great way to show a visiting relative why we love this park.

⭐ Day Trippin'

The Field Trip You Get to Chaperone on Purpose

Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland

Sitting right next door to Huntington Bank Field, Great Lakes Science Center is one of those Cleveland spots that deserves a place on your fall bucket list.

Inside, you can get hands-on with hundreds of interactive exhibits, explore the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, catch a larger-than-life movie in the six-story DOME Theater, and even climb aboard the historic 618-foot Steamship William G. Mather. 🚀🔬⚓

And during football season, you really can’t get much more Cleveland than this. The Science Center sits practically in the Browns’ backyard, close enough to Huntington Bank Field that you can almost hear the Dawg Pound barking. 🐶🏈

Just one important play to remember: Great Lakes Science Center is CLOSED on Browns home game days, so check the schedule before you make the drive.
